The attempt to rehabilitate the rebels against the legitimate government and the need for monuments to honor those who were persecuted for defending

The Civic Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory is Alicante One of the objectives and principles to honor all citizens who fought for freedom, democracy, constitution and the legitimate Government of the Republic instituted in 1931.

From this perspective, in connection with the rehabilitation and construction of monuments to remember the events of the civil war and during the dictatorship, we make public our position for general information:

1) express our most emphatic rejection rehabilitation, by the Municipal Government of Alicante, the monument dedicated to the group of Phalangists, from the Vega Baja, 19 July 1936, sought to support the military coup and assault BenalĂșa provincial prison, in order to release JosĂ© Antonio Primo de Rivera, leader of the English Falange, who had been transferred to this prison. This group of 61 rebels were arrested in Agua Amarga by law enforcement officials, commanded by Captain Rubio Eduardo Funes. Obviously these seditious citizens are not part of those whose memory claimed the Civic Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory, and therefore we can not fail to proclaim our displeasure at the fact that public funds are appropriate for the reconstruction of a monument exalted actions that should never have happened.

Nor would seem acceptable, under any circumstances, the possible placement of a plaque in memory of all who perished as a result of the uprising and subsequent war, as would compromise the character of the monument, to include as defenders of the Republic along with those who fought it.

2) The Civic Commission, for more than four years is suing the authorities for the construction of various monuments commemorating the memory more democratic in the city of Alicante, namely:

- Installation Puerto de Alicante in a work of Eusebio Sempere in memory of those Republicans were caught up in this place in the last days of March 1939. Providing equity capital for this facility, obtained thanks to the contributions of over 100 works of important artists. The port authority has not responded to our requests.

- We have proposed the municipal government of Alicante building a memorial in the so called Campo de los Almendros, for which we have the relevant project, which we were obliged to return a grant from the ministry of the presidency Government, for lack of municipal government approval.

- We have also presented the Alicante Town Hall project - the result of a design competition, whose jury was chaired by Mario Candela, who had represented the City ", to install in your local market, a memorial to remember the more than three hundred victims of the bombing civilians Italian Fascist aviation, at the orders of Franco, which took place on May 25, 1938.

We note, in relation to the two monuments requested the City Council of Alicante, and on which construction has the power, so far, there is, in turn, a commitment to the construction of any of them, or, Of course, the due date for completion, although these memorials if they have a clear character of tribute and remembrance for those who advocated a democratic regime, no doubt, the precursor of our freedoms.

Finally, we mean that, in our view, the opposition to the restoration of the monument to the Falange as our demand for memorials dedicated to the Republicans are included within the spirit and letter of the law known as recovery historical memory.
