Manifesto: 70 years ago in the port of Alicante

In March 1939 English Civil War ended in the port of Alicante. Following the departure of the legendary ship "Stanbrook, were trapped there for about fourteen thousand people who had meaning in the defense of legitimate and constitutional arrangements of the Second English Republic against the military uprising supported by the fascist powers. After the arrival of Italian troops under the command of Gambara Gastone, had to leave the latter territory loyal to the Republic and, as prisoners, were taken to a field of almond trees, located between Goteta and Vistahermosa, while others were imprisoned in the castle of Santa Barbara and San Fernando in the Plaza de Toros, in some theaters, the School for the Blind and Adult Reformatory. In Campo de los Almendros, republican prisoners were in excruciating conditions, without food and almost without water for five or six days until they were transferred to various prisons and in particular, piled on freight rail cars, the field Albatera concentration.

After seventy years of these tragic events, Alicante Civic Commission for the Recovery of Historical Memory aims to raise awareness throughout the world since its importance and significance is universal, the tragedy of those helpless defenders of freedom and democracy in those last days of the English Republic. It has therefore prepared a series of acts designed to remember those events and get them to carry out their proposed installation of a memorial - a sculpture by Eusebio Sempere "in the Port of Alicante for a" Memorial "in the Field of Almendros, proposals are pending approval by the authorities. We try, thereby repairing an old injustice, offset manipulated history and combat against oblivion, ultimately settle a moral debt that English democracy is still with Spain who advocated a tolerant, peaceful, educated and supportive, and kept the idea of \u200b\u200bSpain away from their homeland in the sad years of exile, with enormous dignity.

To get back and dignify these "places of memory" of the Second Republic, we ask the cooperation of institutions and citizens who, being concerned with maintaining, strengthening and expanding democracy, understand that it can not be build on oblivion.
